Nokia 6300

£69 PAYG when purchased with £10 credit) This wildly popular handset is a Nokia classic, with decent 2MP camera, web browsing, music player, FM radio and that reassuring Nokia interface and build quality. Read our five-star Nokia 6300 review Blackberry Pearl (£145, plus £5 a month for unlimited email and web) Messaging addicts rejoice - the Blackberry Pearl is now available on Pay As You Go with Orange. It's the best emailer on the market bar none, but it's worth noting that you'll need to pay an extra £5 a month for the email and web browsing service. There's no contract, though, so you can cancel whenever you like. Of course, the iPhone is also available on Pay As You Go on O2, but you'll have to fork out a whopping £349 for the handset (on the plus side, you get a year's free internet browsing included in that price

SamsungF210

£50 PAYG when purchased with £10 credit) This dinky music phone has the keypad hidden by a rotating screen. It has a 2MP camera that's capable of capturing passable video, and FM radio and enough memory for a couple of hundred songs. Read our full Samsung F210 review

T-Mobile G1

(free with £30-a-month contract) Another touchscreen iPhone rival, but this one has serious smartphone credentials. It's the first phone to run the Google Android operating system, which is gloriously easy to use and beautifully integrates Google's expanding array of free web services - Gmail email, Google Maps for satellite navigation and local search, GTalk instant messaging, Google Calendar and much more. Like the iPhone, it also has a growing array of downloadable applications and games. The G1 isn't just a touchscreen phone either - you can slide out a smalll but perfectly formed QWERTY keypad. I love the Android software, and it's particularly useful if you already use Google's free services online. However, the G1 is definitely first-generation hardware (as the name suggests). The camera isn't great and lacks a flash, the overall phone is too bulky and - inexcusably - theres no headphone socket or adapter so you have to use the terrible earphones that come with the phone. Still, we can expect to see lots more Google phones over the coming year. Read our full T-Mobile G1 review

LG RenoirKC910

KC910 (free with a £30-a-month contract, £300 SIM-free) Another touch-screen hottie, the Renoir is the latest version of the line of phones that began with the Prada and continued with the popular Viewty. It boasts an incredibly hi-res 8megapixel camera with excellent video capture, including a surprisingly good slow-motion mode (you can check out our video of the Renoir in slo-mo action ). While it's not quite the best cameraphone on the market (in my view, that's the Sony Ericsson C905) the Renoir is a good all-rounder, thanks to the addition of Wi-Fi for web browsing and GPS for satellite navigation. The lack of a standard headphone socket is a big omission, though. Read our full LG KC910 Renoir review

Nokia 5800

Xpressmusic (free with £15-a-month contract, £250 SIM-free) Despite losing its cool 'Tube' moniker, Nokia's first touchscreen mobile has a lot going for it. I've been living with one my in pocket for the past two weeks and - for once - I haven't found myself pining for my Apple iPhone 3G.
